Working Solution: Decommissioning 11 iSeries/AS400s

The Challenge

SSL International plc is a British manufacturer of healthcare products. Its best known brands were Durex and Scholl; other significant brands were Sauber and Mister Baby. The company’s name was an abbreviation of Seton Scholl London International, its predecessor businesses. Since November 2010, SSL International has been a part of Reckitt Benckiser.

Seton Scholl London International* (SSL) made a strategic decision to align all the systems it had acquired through M&A activity with SAP ERP on an SQL server platform. Transferring so many data variants to SAP was daunting.

The Solution The Result
  • Implement DataNovata: The Enterprise Application Data Bridge, to format all the different data structures into a uniform SQL Server database.
  • Generate an XML, Java-based, DataNovata application that provides a consistent user view of all the data variants.
The Result
  • The entire DataNovata project took less than 12 months from start to completion
  • It took 1 week to train business users on theDataNovata application
  • SSL can successfully decommission itsiSeries/AS400 platform with no loss of data integrity or accessibility
The Project The Review

Define a common data structure for all the database variants that is meaningful to the business user.

Segment the DataNovata application into relevant models e.g. Customer care, Finance, Manufacturing.

Plan for worldwide implementation in multiple languages using VMware on an

SQL platform.

The Review

“DataNovata exceeded our expectations. The team quickly understood what we were trying to achieve and we have found DataNovata to be robust and easy to use. I would certainly recommend DataNovata to anyone wishing to decommission applications.”
